Taking preventive measures to stay healthy
is an important aspect of healthy aging.

The chances of experiencing chronic or severe diseases increase as we age, but staying healthy can help reduce the odds.  Much of the potential disability, pain and illness can be avoided if a person lives a healthy life style and takes preventive measures to stay healthy.

Everyone who is aging will benefit from eating a healthy diet, refraining from using tobacco, remaining physically active and having regular check-ups.

Early detection of any disease can improve the probability of successfully fighting the disease and its complications.  Screening for breast, colorectal, prostate, and other cancers are important to aging adults.  You should also be screened regularly for diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and osteoporosis.

Aging adults and their families often bear a heavy financial burden trying to cope with chronic diseases.  Practicing healthy living habits while you are young will decrease your risk of having a weakened condition that can affect your quality of life.

Physical exercise plays an important role in preventing chronic illness.

If you've exercised all your life, don't stop now just because you've started to age.  That's when you need it most.  You don't have to be doing heavy cardiovascular workouts but you can still practice less physically demanding forms of exercise.  If you haven't done much exercising before, now is the time to begin.

You can start with some light physical activities.  Try walking; just a walk around the mall or the block can help.  You can add more distance and time as your body gets accustomed to the extra movement.  Some of your hobbies like golfing, tennis, bowling and gardening can also provide beneficial forms of exercise.  Believe it or not, the new Nintendo Wii has some great video games that could soon become a fun part of your exercise program.

Maintaining your mental acuity is another important aspect of healthy aging.

Keep your mind active, read, do puzzles and other mental activities that will give your brain a workout too.  Learn how to use a computer.  Take part in social activities and keep up to date with family and friends.  And remember to laugh!  A good laugh can relieve stress and tension and ease depression.

Much still needs to be done in finding ways to respond to the potential needs of us aging Boomers.  It is estimated by the year 2030, one in every five Americans will be older than 65 years old.  More research is required to determine the causes of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia and other ailments often suffered by aging adults.

But in the meantime we can help ourselves to have an enjoyable life in our senior years by practicing preventative measures now.

One important preventative measure is to avoid the potential dangers and side effects of prescription drugs by learning more about safer, natural therapies for healing.

Practicing Ayurveda is a good example of using natural therapies to improve your health.  Discover what body type you are and which foods and herbs are most beneficial for your body type.  One renowned Ayurvedic fruit that is suitable for all body types is the Amalaki berry.

Also known for its rejuvenative potential, Amalaki rebuilds and maintains new tissues and increases red blood cell count.  It cleanses the mouth, strengthens the teeth, nourishes the bones, and causes hair and nails to grow.  It improves eyesight, stops bleeding of the gums, and relieves inflammation of the stomach and colon. It is the highest natural source of vitamin C, with 3000 mg per fruit. It improves appetite, cleanses the intestines and regulates blood-sugar.
